The Lady and the Spy
Published in Paperback by Kensington Pub Corp (Mass Market) (March, 1996)
Author: Monique Ellis
Average review score:

A delightful older couple --
Just as she has one character say to another in this terrific and enchanting book, "your goal is to entertain", the author heeds her own advice--in a truly superb manner.

This is the concluding book in a trilogy begun with THE FORTESCUE DIAMOND and continued into DeLACY'S ANGEL. Readers of these earlier books will not only be happy at becoming reacquainted with characters from them, but will delight in meeting several new and intriguing members of London society at the end of continental hostilities.

In this particular episode, we learn more about the Lady Serena Duchesne, who works hard to establish--and maintain--her reputation as an eccentric spinster. The daughter of a Duke, she also has a secret which she guards diligently. She is the anonymous author of several daring novels, written for and about the snobbish ton she knows so well.

Enter Mr. John Macy, "Gentleman" who arrives for the Season with impeccable letters of introduction. A retired master spy, the world of intrigue and danger threatens to reclaim him, if his interest in Lady Serena doesn't bring him down first.

This unlikely, but totally charming and slightly older couple combine their sharp intelligence to bring about several happy endings, but what else would one expect from an author who is positively a spell-binding storyteller and writer?

A beautifully written and illustrated story!
Land of the Four Winds is a wonderful story, which I read to my son again and again. He loves the young hero, Toneih, and the beautiful illustrations of the land with color. I highly recommend this book. Congratulations to Veronica Freeman Ellis--we look forward to her next stories!

Land of the Spotted Eagle

Land of the Spotted Eagle
This is the finest book I have read on the lifestyle of the Lakota (Sioux),people not only before European contact, but also how they dealt with their transformation into "civilized" members of the dominate society. It was originally written in 1933. Luther Standing Bear took his name after entering Carlisle Indian School. How sad that the newcomers to North America didn't take the time to learn the culture of the original inhabitants of this land. We would all be better off today if they had. This book gives much insight into why. Even at this late date, there is a lot that can be learned from "Native Wisdom." I highly suggest that anyone interested, read this book. It will touch your heart!

The Land, Always the Land
Published in Hardcover by Cabin Bookshelf (July, 1998)
Authors: Mel Ellis, Suzanne Ellis, and Ted J. Rulseh
Average review score:

A gift from a legend
Pure poetry and not a word of rhyme. There are sentences in this collection of brief essays that will stop you in your tracks with their beauty and profundity. Mel's writing style is as natural as the natural world of which he writes so fondly. This book is divided into 12 chapters, each one titled for a month of the year. Travel with this great and wise man as he journeys from recollection to remembrance, often personal, always insightful. This is a treasure of a book, and, like love, meant to be shared. Treat yourself, then share with a friend. You all will be glad you did.

Laughing While Learning: Using Humor in the Classroom

ideas and informaton
I like how this book not only tells you how to use humor in the classroom but why, and what to tell the principals when they ask. This book also tells you the different ways to use humor. I am not the red clown nose type teacher, and this book offered many ideas for me.

Lazarus Churchyard
Published in Paperback by Tundra Pub (June, 1993)
Author: Warren Ellis
Average review score:

Stylishly ultraviolent and wickedly funny
Lazarus Churchyard, as far as I can tell, was a character who appeared in Heavy Metal and possibly even less mainstream books. He is an older brainchild of Warren Ellis from his pre-Stormwatch days.

Lazarus is technically immortal. The vast majority of his body was shorn away at the genetic base level and replaced with highly resilient intelligent plastics capable of adapting to any situation in approximately the time it takes for a thought to be fired from the brain to another part of the body. At the time in which we see him, he's been alive for approximately 400 years, in which the world has seen plagues, revolutions, ethnic cleansings, and corporate takeovers of sinister proportions (much like "The Company" so often referred to in the "Alien" series). We are presented with four misadventures in the life of our antihero as he consumes prodigious quantities of drugs and wishes for death while casually dispatching anyone who gets in his way or those which he maintains strained friendships.

The language is short, sweet, and stylish. Ellis creates a futurespeak which tastes familiar if you've read "A Clockwork Orange" but is an entirely different creature of its own. "Creation" is the preferred slang of Lazarus' time, but we are thankfully spared the task of having to decipher it ourselves.

If you're a fan of Ellis' later works, you can't help but notice shades of "Transmetropolitan" begging to be fully fleshed out.

The art is dark, depending heavily on shades of purple and red. At times seeming almost amateurish, one cannot help but be struck by the masterful sequencing and panelling choices, not to mention the skill at which "the gutter" (as Scott McCloud put it) is used.

Although out-of-print, "The Lazarus Churchyard Collection" can still be found in some out-of-the-way places (I found my copy in the bargain bin of a Newbury Comics in Boston). It may also be possible to find the original printings of these stories in back-issues of Heavy Metal.

I highly recommend this collection for the serious Ellis fanatic or those who are simply looking for a good comic read.

Hard hitting personal Leadership growth strategies
This book is fantastic!!! It has shone a new light on my struggles... with pinpoint accuracy. Detailed work is the most
challenging for me. As a result of this insightful book - I repeat the "engaging" persons mantra often - "Focus, focus, focus" "No, No, No" & "Prioritise, Prioritise, Prioritise".

It has also provided me the best framework / paradigm I have yet to come across on leadership (accomplish the mission and look
after the people).

Learning to Trust Again: A Young Woman's Journey to Healing from Sexual Abuse
Published in Paperback by Discovery House Pub (January, 2000)
Authors: Christa Sands and Joyce K. Ellis
Average review score:

You will know you are not alone
There are very few books on sexual abuse by twenty-something women who have actually experienced abuse, so I've often felt like I was the only person my age who experienced it. For years I've been lying to myself about my past, and this book not only helped me come to terms with my molestation but also opened up a few discussions with my family and friends. Sexual abuse carries so many stigmas that it seems like no one will talk about it. Ms. Sands is unbelievably brave, displaying her hearbreak and slow healing to her readers so we can know that we are not alone. I cannot thank her enough for opening her heart like that. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
